Therefore, it comes after a lot of previous iteration work that did most of the groundwork.
",

The idea at a high-level was that you would do things inside this operating system interface to improve it and allow you to progress, unlocking new parts of the story and new ways to progress.
\n
ShiftOS was developed by many different people over its life. It began as a project from a YouTuber known as OSFirstTimer, and was then handed over to the community as he was unable to continue development. I was co-lead of a very early team in that process of being handed over, and I would roughly estimate I was no longer involved by 2015 / 2016 or so.
\n
Unfortunately, I'm not 100% certain on the final version I worked on, although it was probably 0.0.9 Alpha 1 based on available source code.
\n
As part of the development team, I worked on and oversaw various additions and improvements to the game, including bug fixes, new utilities and progression being added.
\n
After my leave from the development team, ShiftOS restarted development from scratch various times under new and different development teams, with the final version with the 'ShiftOS' name coming to an end in 2017.
",

It was built from the ground-up to include extra functionality missed from the official launcher, such as a detailed server status page, better update tracking, looking up of players details and other planned functionality.
\n
As I began to play the game less and less, I decided to stop work on the launcher. Subsequent changes to the API it calls means that the launcher does not have the full functionality it did when first developed. The regular TruckersMP launcher also improved in the meantime, making 3rd party launchers less relevant.
\n
The launcher is open-source under the MIT license. It stopped receiving updates in 2017, though received a one-off update in September 2022 to fix vulnerabilities in the third party packages used, as well as moving to the ngserve.games domain.
",

Once these are identified, it copies these in to a separate directory and symlinks the files back to their regular locations. This means to the games, they're completely unaware that any change has happened. To the user, this allows them to save space.
\n
The SpaceSaver utility has been received 4 updates since release in March 2021, with over 400 total downloads as of April 2026. It is also included in the Mod Manager.
",

Unfortunately, it doesn't support what is known as 'loose-file' mods, which became increasingly prevalent as a way to prevent mods from overwriting each other, as they only edit what is required.
\n
Based upon that, most users have moved to Vortex. This mod manager remains available as a lightweight alternative for anyone who wants a very simple mod manager.
\n
As of April 2026, with more than 50 updates and 5+ years of development, the mod manager has been downloaded over 10,900 times.
\n
Looking for the non-beta version? Visit the NexusMods link along the side and download V1.5.8.3 stable.
\n
The above download in the links section also includes my Fallout 4 SpaceSaver utility, which is auto-extracted when you first run the mod manager.
",
